New car and truck sales continue double-digit growth track in April
Cleveland, OH (May 19, 2011) – Sales of new cars and trucks continued on a strong growth track in April, rising more than 17 percent when compared for the same month a year prior, according to statistics released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA). For the year to date, sales of new cars and trucks are up more than 31 percent this year, with sales statistics for the discontinued Pontiac and Saturn brands removed.
“All signs still point to a strong year of recovery for the retail auto industry in Northern Ohio,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, Jr. president of the GCADA. “This turnaround actually started last summer, so we will soon start to go up against some pretty strong numbers when comparing this year to last year on a month-to-month basis. However, we are optimistic that this momentum can be maintained, especially with people opting to trade-in their present vehicles for the more fuel efficient vehicles being introduced by manufacturers this year.”
In addition to strong new car sales, dealers are also reporting a dramatic increase in the value of used vehicles, and are now paying top dollar for consumer trades.
A total of 24 brands registered sales increases for the month compared to April 2010. 27 brands are up from January through April when comparing sales to the same period in 2010.
In terms of total units sold for the month, Ford regained its number one spot from Chevrolet, although the latter did register a very healthy sales gain of more than 33 percent when comparing April of this year with last. Honda once again took home third place honors in terms of total units sold, while Toyota came in fourth. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep continued their resurgence, registering sales gains for the month of more than 63 percent, 72 percent and 52 percent respectively. Among luxury vehicles, the Infiniti brand saw the greatest growth in the month, registering a sales increase of 133 percent when comparing April of this year versus last year. The Fiat brand also had registrations for the first time in many years this April.
