New Vehicle Sales Up for First Half of the Year

Cleveland, OH (July 11, 2013) – The retail automotive industry completed the first half of the year on a positive note, with sales climbing 6.6 percent in June when compared to the same month a year prior, according to statistics released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA). For the year to date, sales are up 8.4 percent over 2012.

Dealers are confident the trend will continue through the end of the year.

“The first half of 2013 has been a successful run for the franchised dealers of Northern Ohio and the industry recovery is continuing its momentum,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “As consumer confidence improves, we anticipate the second half of 2013 will show consistent growth as consumers return to dealership showrooms to replace their aging vehicles.”

Last month, franchised new vehicle dealers in Northern Ohio sold a total of 19,566 new vehicles, compared to 18,353 vehicles sold in June of 2012. For the year to date, dealers have sold 113,375 vehicles compared to 104,572 vehicles sold last year at this time.

While Ford continued to lead sales in Northern Ohio in terms of units sold, Chevrolet closed the gap between first and second. Ford sales rose four percent in June with sales in the month this year totaling 3,346 compared to 3,217 in June of 2012. Chevrolet sales increased more than 18 percent with sales climbing to 3,027 units in June of 2013, up from 2,551 in the same month a year prior.

Both Honda and Toyota enjoyed strong months, with Honda narrowly edging out Toyota for third place. The two brands were in a virtual dead heat in terms of units sold in June of 2013, with Honda selling just two units more than Toyota. Sales for Honda were up almost 20 percent in the month.

Several brands posted breakout months. BMW saw sales climb more than 48 percent, when comparing last month’s sales to June of 2012. Dodge also had a stellar month, with sales climbing more than 43 percent. Porsche registered an increase of almost 35 percent. For the year to date, Porsche sales are up over 63 percent.
