New Vehicle Sales Continue Upward Climb in August

Cleveland, OH (September 11, 2013) –  New vehicle sales continued to rebound in August, with franchised new car and truck dealerships across Northern Ohio selling 21,719 vehicles, an increase of 8.52 percent over August of 2012, according to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA).

“The Northern Ohio market continued to excel in August,” says Louis A. Vitantonio, Jr., president of the GCADA. “Leasing has made a strong comeback over the past year, which will jumpstart the used car market in the future. As the average age of vehicles on the road passes 11 years old, vehicles will soon need replaced. Coupled with the fuel savings, technology and quality offered by manufacturers now – versus 15 years ago – the purchase of a new vehicle makes more sense than ever before.”

Through the end of August this year, dealers have sold 157,098 vehicles, an increase of 9.65 percent over the same period a year prior. Sales of used vehicles also are up almost five percent for the year to date versus the same time last year.

In terms of individual brands, Chevrolet continued its hot streak, registering a sales increase of 18.69 percent when comparing August of 2013 with August of 2012. With 3,181 vehicles sold, it was still not enough to catch Ford, which sold 3,589 vehicles in the month, an increase of 5.78 percent over August of 2012.

Honda won back third place from Toyota, ringing up an increase of over 20 percent. It sold 2,092 vehicles in August compared to Toyota’s 1,829 vehicles. Other big movers included BMW, which registered an increase of almost 52 percent comparing August of 2013 with August of 2012. Subaru also rang up a sales increase of over 20 percent for the month.
