Northern Ohio’s Appetite
For Trucks and SUVs Grows in June

Cleveland, OH (July 9, 2015) –  Northern Ohio consumers’ appetites for trucks and SUVs continued unabated in June, with sales actually growing by almost 22 percent when comparing the month against June of 2014, according to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA). The uptick in truck and SUVs sales contributed to an overall growth in total new vehicle sales of 2.89 percent for the month, outpacing June of 2014 when sales rose 16.57 percent over June of 2013.

“Even though we are coming up against some very strong months in 2014, overall sales continue to grow thanks to strong truck and SUV sales,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “In the past, many consumers put off buying a truck or SUV, buying smaller vehicles to offset rising fuel prices. Now, with those concerns behind them, many consumers are turning once again to larger SUVs and trucks due to their practicality and utility.”

Franchised new vehicle dealers in Northern Ohio sold 7,696 trucks in June compared to 6,314 trucks in June of 2014, an increase of 21.89 percent. For the year-to-date, truck sales are up 13.57 percent. In terms of cars and light trucks and SUVs combined, dealers in Northern Ohio sold 23,467 vehicles, an increase over the 22,808 vehicles sold in June of 2014. In June of 2013, Northern Ohio dealers sold 19,566 cars and light trucks.

Ford once again led the pack in Northern Ohio, selling 3,781 vehicles compared to its rival Chevrolet’s 3,643 vehicles. But the former represents a sales decrease of 2.32 percent in the month while the latter represents an increase of 14.34 percent. So, the Golden Bowtie closed ground on the Blue Oval. Honda beat its offshore rival Toyota for third, selling 2,169 vehicles in the month, one more than it sold in June of 2014.

Acura, Chrysler, Jeep, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mazda, Mini and Subaru all rang up sales increases of more than 20 percent for the month.
