Truck and SUV Sales Closing in
on Car Sales as Dominant Market Segment

Cleveland, OH (July 12, 2017) –  New vehicle sales continued to grow across Northern Ohio in the month of June, according to the latest figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA).

While sales of cars declined when comparing June of this year with June of 2016, sales of trucks and SUVs continued to grow at a dramatic pace. In terms of numbers, car sales still dominate the market. However, if sales of trucks and SUVs continue to grow, they will eventually overtake cars as the leading new vehicle market segment.

“The consumers of Northern Ohio continue to push our market with the purchase of trucks and SUVs.  Unfortunately, this shift in preference comes at the cost of passenger car sales,” says Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “There are some big sedan introductions coming this fall, which could improve car sales. All in all, we continue to have positive year over year increases for our market.”

Franchised new vehicle dealers sold 10,015 new trucks and SUVs last month compared with 12,540 new cars, a difference of 2,525 units. However, car sales declined 11.25 percent when comparing June of 2017 with June of last year, while sales of trucks and SUVs climbed 25.88 percent over the same period. For the year to date, new truck and SUV sales are up 34.5 percent, while sales of new cars are off 11.92 percent.

Overall, sales of total new vehicle sales climbed 2.13 percent in June, with franchised new vehicle dealers selling 22,555 units this year compared with 22,085 in the month last year. For the year to date, total new vehicle sales are up 4.63 percent. Used vehicle sales were strong for the month, with dealers selling 18,212 vehicles compared with 16,987 a year prior, an increase of 7.21 percent.

Ford edged out Chevrolet for the best-selling brand in the month selling 3,352 units compared to 3,237 for Chevy. Honda’s sales for the month were essentially flat with last year, selling 2016 vehicles. However, it was enough to outdistance offshore rival Toyota, which sold 1,928 units.
