New Vehicle Sales Pace Slows in June

Cleveland, OH (July 8, 2016) –  While sales of trucks and SUVs continued to grow in June, total new vehicles sales for the month were off 5.89 percent when comparing the month with June of 2015. For the year to date, total new vehicles sales are off 1.17 percent, according to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association (GCADA).

“While the pace of sales has slowed in our market, we continue to see a healthy sales volume for trucks and SUVs,” says Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “Sales cannot increase indefinitely; we are seeing a plateau in the sales cycle in the Northern Ohio market.”

Franchised new vehicle dealers across Northern Ohio sold 22,085 new vehicles in the month of June, compared to 23,467 over the same period a year prior. Sales of trucks and SUVs, however, remained in the black with dealers selling 7,956 in the month compared to 7,696 a year prior—an increase of 3.38 percent for the month. For the year to date, sales of trucks and SUVs are up 7.27 percent.

Ford sold 3,392 total new vehicles in the month, edging out Chevrolet for Northern Ohio’s best-selling brand. The Golden bowtie rang up 3,197 new vehicles sold in the month. However, Ford truck sales rose nearly four percent when comparing June of 2016 with June of 2015. Honda took home the bronze with 2,030 total vehicles sold, followed by Toyota with 1,971 vehicles sold in the month.

Volvo, Jaguar, Porsche, Cadillac and Buick were the brands that registered the most significant sales increases in the month.

The following brands posted sales increases in June of 2016 versus June of 2015: Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Fiat, jaguar, jeep, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota and Volvo.

14 Brands Up for the Year (’16 v. ’15)
The following brands posted sales increases for the year to date in 2016: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Fiat, Honda, Infiniti, Jeep, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mitsubishi, Ram, Subaru, Toyota and Volvo.

Retail sales figures are based on vehicle registration reports from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.  Vehicle sales data includes the counties of: Ashland, Ashtabula, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Holmes, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas and Wayne.
