New Car and Truck Sales Continue Double-Digit Growth in June
Cleveland, OH (July 8, 2011) –Retail sales of new cars and light trucks showed strong double digit growth when comparing June of this year with June of 2010, according to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA). In June of this year, dealerships in Northern Ohio sold 18,312 vehicles compared with 16,049 vehicles in the same month last year, an increase of more than 14 percent. For the year to date, sales of new cars and light trucks are up more than 27 percent when figures from the discontinued Pontiac and Saturn brands are removed.
“Despite registering double digit growth in June, the growth in sales of new cars and trucks slowed slightly due to tighter inventories of many popular vehicles,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “Sales are expected to pick back up in July, as dealer inventories return to normal. We expect this trend to continue through August. Credit is more available, and if fuel prices continue to fall, it will only help consumer confidence.
“In addition, the average vehicle on the road today is 10.2 years old, compared with an average of 8.9 years in 2000. That means many people will soon consider replacing older vehicles. This would obviously help new vehicle sales, but will also increase the value of late model, low mileage used vehicles, which means trade-ins are worth a lot more today than in years past.”
A total of 23 brands registered sales increases for the month, when comparing sales to the same period a year prior. For the year to date, 25 brands are up from January through June when comparing sales to the same period in 2010.
In terms of total units sold for the month, Ford retained its number one spot over Chevrolet, selling 3,306 units compared to 2,816 for Chevy. Honda maintained its third place position with 1,544 units, while Kia broke into the top four with sales of 1,474 units, besting Toyota for the first time. However, for the year-to-date, Toyota still maintains a strong lead over the Korean manufacturer, at least locally.
