January Auto Sales Climb Despite Adverse Weather
Cleveland, OH (February 15, 2011) – New vehicle truck and car sales started the year off on a high note, increasing 38.79% when comparing January 2011 v. January 2010, removing sales statistics for the discontinued Pontiac and Saturn brands. The figures were released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association.
A total of 31 new vehicle brands registered sales gains over the month, with some manufacturers racking up strong triple digit growth. Ford continued to lead all automakers in total new vehicle sales in Northern Ohio, selling 2,668 units for a 36.4% increase. Chevrolet narrowed the gap, selling 2,582 units, but registering a 60.07% increase in sales. While Chevrolet registered strong sales gains, Buick racked up sales of 404 units for a 128.25% increase
“While we were expecting an increase in sales, I didn’t think January would begin the year this strong, especially with the local weather conditions we had during the month,” said Louis A. Vitantonio, Jr., president of the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association. “With the Cleveland Auto Show right around the corner, and the warming weather, we are sure to get an even bigger surge in sales in the weeks ahead. The industry is certainly getting off to a good start in 2011.”
The Cleveland Auto Show opens its doors to the public on Saturday, February 26 and runs through Sunday, March 6 at the I-X Center in Cleveland.
While Ford and Chevy led the way in terms of unit sales, Honda and Toyota were not far behind, coming in at 1,554 units and 1,381 respectively. Chrysler’s brands all showed strong growth, with Dodge registering growth of 155.39% when comparing January 2011 v. January 2010. Eleven luxury brands also showed strong growth over the period, led by Cadillac which sold 352 units for an increase of 147.76% when comparing January 2011 over the same period a year prior.
