Dealers Ring Up Sales Gains In August
Cleveland, OH (Sept. 8, 2017) – Franchised new vehicle dealers across Northern Ohio sold enough trucks and SUVs in the month of August to propel the local market into positive territory, despite softer sales of cars and sedans. Dealers sold 23,698 new vehicles last month compared to 23,192 in August of 2016, an increase of 2.18 percent. For the year to date, total new vehicle sales are up almost four percent, according to figures released today by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers’ Association (GCADA).
“Consumers continue to make significant SUV and truck purchases making August another positive sales gain for 2017,” says Louis A. Vitantonio, president of the GCADA. “As the 2018’s arrive at dealers’ lots there’s no better time to pick up a remaining 2017.”
Which should make for strong sales well into fall.
Car sales were off 12.51 percent in August, when comparing the month to the same time period a year ago. At the same time, truck and SUV sales climbed 27.22 percent and are up almost 32 percent year to date. So far this year, dealers across Northern Ohio have sold 171,043 vehicles compared to 164,570 last year, an increase of 3.93 percent.
Chevrolet rang up a double-digit sales increase in August, selling 3,641 vehicles compared to Ford’s 3,577 units, the former nailing down the title of Northern Ohio’s best selling brand for the month. Toyota enjoyed a sales increase of 9.12 percent, besting its rival Honda by 41 vehicles, for third place in the Northern Ohio market.

The following brands posted sales increases in August of 2017 versus August of 2016: Acura, Alfa Romeo, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Infiniti, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Maserati, Mazda, Mini, Porsche, Ram, Smart, Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen.

The following brands posted sales increases for the year to date in 2017: Acura, Alfa Romeo, Buick, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Lincoln, Maserati, Mazda, Mini, Porsche, Ram, Subaru and Volkswagen.
